I travelled to Egypt for the first time this past week (Feb 28 - Mar 05) for two conferences, at the biblioteca Alexandrina in Alexandria, Egypt.

The following list was written on the plane ride from Cairo to London, on the way back to Toronto. Here are some lessons learned:


Experiences, Insights & Lessons Learned

Don’t expect others to react to a situation in the same way that you would. ‘They are not you’

Make things happen for yourself – knowing when to act on impulse and inspiration

Changing conditions of environment to stimulate creativity, reduce stress, learn

Creating your own opportunities for learning

Importance of a nutritional breakfast to last over a long day

Meeting with ‘celebrity’ figures (i.e. nephew of President of Libya)

Bazaar hotel experience (sweets)

Extreme living conditions (riches and poverty)

Managing time and prioritizing constantly

Music as a form of relaxation in awkward or demanding moments

Willingness to take adventures (riding a horse & camel in the desert)

Enjoying Egyptian food, Sheesha, mint tea, strawberry juice, Celep (drink), Belly dancing

Expanding vocabulary in Arabic (10 words)!

London Airport – enjoying the lounge, massive shopping mall, LONG walk between terminals

Touching the Mediterranean Sea

Aggressive negotiations when shopping

Receiving many gifts and words of affection

Poolside view of the pyramids in Cairo

Feeling like the ‘exhibit’/celebrity at historical sites (school groups)

Utilizing eye contact and body language as a major form of communication in order to overcome language barriers

Knowing when to let go of worry, doubt and uncertainty

Utilizing your powers

Law of attraction – wishing for something and having it manifest itself

In Sh’Allah – trusting in powers beyond yourself, call to prayer as an invitation to give thanks

How different people react to crisis

Understanding boundaries and

Choosing your moments to speak up and voice opinions (Arab Youth Forum)

Having patience for success

Making the most time out of limited time

Breathing deeply to center self

Mind over Matter - How to sustain yourself on less than 3 hours of sleep and little time to eat

Overcoming jet lag by convincing yourself that you have already adjusted

Performing at your personal best and letting go of excuses

'Winging it' rather than fearing it - when you aren’t able to fully prepare yourself

Go with the FLOW

Don’t let past fears hinder or direct your current actions

Don’t argue just to be right – seek to understand more than to be understood

Remember that you are not alone – appointed

Balancing act of multiple roles

Avoid depending on a single source of strength

Laugher and humour as a way to manage anxieties and build friendship across cultures

Facing your fears

Don’t dwell on the past – reflect, analyze, learn and move forward

Value of documentation and capturing experiences in order to remember and preserve sacred moments and experiences

Focus on what you CAN control – which is how you react and respond to your circumstances

So inspiring words.. Even I dont touch sm of its meaning (I mean what gives u this impression?) But it is great to be inspired by all around u .
and I learn from this post that I have to hv sm moments to feedback myself As soon as i can..
